Billion Dollar One-Person-Company

Sam Altman's Private Whatsapp Chats

I swear I wasn’t going to write my newsletter today.

The newsletter has doing really well recently (very grateful to you for that) and I thought I’d earned a day off.

That was until I read that Sam Altman (yes THAT Sam Altman) recently said this :

In my little group chat with my tech CEO friends there’s this betting pool for the first year that there is a one-person billion-dollar company

Sam Altman

Reading that quote, I just felt compelled to write this, to the point that I didn’t even bother to contact sponsors for today’s issue.

Now I remember first discovering the concept of the one-person business while binge reading Dan Koe’s newsletter archive after finding him on Youtube last year.

Here’s a recent video of his :

I wasn’t fully sold but the idea of a one-person business was intriguing to me.

After all, who doesn’t want to make millions of dollars?

But who wants the stress of managing an empire with hundreds of employees?

You’re telling me that you can earn millions with no boss, no deadlines (besides the ones you set for yourself) and doing work you actually find fun?

This was the promise this man was selling to his audience but I was skeptical.

After all, I couldn’t point to anyone I knew in real life who had pulled this off, what if this guy was lying and his tax statements were photoshopped?

But the intrigue was enough for me to try some projects on my own.

Recently this newsletter has garnered a ton of traction and has become a sizable income stream for me.

My next target is to earn Rs. 20 lakh (~$24,000) in a year as a solopreneur - a wildly achievable target with my current metrics.

Now it’s not generational wealth by any means but that level of income would already put me top 1.5% of earners in my country, working for myself, a couple hours a day, on something I find fun anyway, in my first year of monetization.

I even had to turn down an opportunity potentially worth a lot more money because I was enjoying working for myself so much.

Maybe that’s not mind-blowing to you but it was for me, and as a fun side project, I decided to start recording some videos to show people what I had been up to.

(Your friends in real life are seldom interested in click-through-rates and CPAs, sad, I know)

Now I do not have a grand-plan with these videos, nor do I plan to monetize my channel, but the part that I do cherish is waking up to messages from people everyday asking questions or celebrating milestones doing the same thing that I have been obsessed with for a few months.

Seeing those videos gain some traction alongside some of the smartest people in the world validating this niche idea that I started this business on?

Well, it’s making for exciting times for sure.
